The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is building a new 415,000-square-foot Terrell State Hospital to provide inpatient psychiatric care for North Texans. The facility will feature 250 beds and state-of-the-art therapeutic spaces.
To support wastewater management at the site, NWPX Park is supplying two 2,500-gallon Bar Screen Systems (Model BSAH). Each precast unit measures 13’ x 11’ x 7’ and weighs more than 50,000 pounds. While identical in size, the systems vary slightly in channel design—one with a 21-inch inlet and the other with a 12-inch inlet, both with 8-inch outlets. Built from reinforced concrete and epoxy-coated for durability, each unit integrates a stainless steel inclined bar screen, manual hand rakes, self-closing gates, and perimeter handrails for safe inspection and maintenance. Designed for direct burial, the systems arrived pre-engineered and ready to install.
The BarScreen™ BSAH captures and removes solid waste at the front end of the wastewater stream, protecting downstream equipment and preventing clogs or backups. Wastewater flows through an inclined grid of spaced bars that trap debris while allowing liquid to pass through. This process effectively intercepts rags, wipes, diapers, plastics, and other non-biodegradable items that are common sources of pump and sewer line failures.
With their rugged design and turnkey installation, NWPX Bar Screen Systems offer a reliable, economical solution for institutions where non-biodegradable materials frequently enter wastewater systems, including hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, and industrial facilities. At the new Terrell State Hospital, these systems will provide reliable wastewater management that protects downstream infrastructure and keeps critical operations running smoothly.
