Union Medical Center is a newly constructed hospital in Union County, South Carolina, and part of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Strategically located in a central area of this rural community, the 99,600-square-foot facility is designed to expand patient access, improve care, and consolidate physician practices under one roof.
As part of the hospital’s water distribution infrastructure, ParkUSA supplied a 16,000-gallon BreakTank® domestic water storage system. Engineered and fabricated in accordance with city requirements and AWWA standards, the welded stainless steel tank features an interior epoxy lining and an exterior oxide primer finish. This system provides a secure emergency backup water supply—ensuring that hospital operations and patient services continue uninterrupted if access to the municipal water source is ever compromised. In addition to emergency storage, the BreakTank® activates when outside water pressure drops too low, helping maintain consistent water pressure within the building and preventing backflow to protect the hospital’s potable water supply from cross-contamination.
With a height of 20’ and a diameter of 12’-4”, the tank’s tall, slender design presented unique engineering considerations due to its high center of gravity. To address this, ParkUSA’s design team recommended anchor bolts to secure the tank to its foundation and resist tipping forces. Collaborating with the project engineer, ParkUSA developed an approved drawing that included six base anchors, which were welded into place prior to coating.
Additional features of the system include a 6” float fill valve, high/low level control panel, and sight gauge assembly for easy inspection. Interior and exterior ladders provide safe maintenance access via a 24” square manway with a bolt-down stainless steel cover.
The BreakTank® shipped from ParkUSA’s Houston facility with a 3-day transit to South Carolina. Due to its size, it was transported horizontally on a flatbed trailer, with internal components and ladder securely packaged in a separate crate.
ParkUSA coordinated closely with the onsite construction team, offering offloading guidance and remote support throughout the installation process. The result was a smooth, on-schedule installation and a reliable water storage system that supports Union Medical Center’s critical community healthcare services.
