Tech Talk: Dewatering Containers

November 4, 2026

What factors should I consider when selecting a dewatering container?

Selecting the right dewatering container starts with understanding the material being processed. Sludge, slurries, and other wet solids vary in particle size, consistency, and drainage characteristics, all of which influence filtration requirements and equipment selection. NWPX Park offers three Park Process dewatering container systems—AquaCat™, GeoCat™, and GritCat™—designed to address different waste stream characteristics and operational needs.

Fine-Particle Sludges Requiring Flocculation – AquaCat™

AquaCat™ dewatering containers are designed for light gravity sludge and slurries containing very fine particles that require flocculation for effective dewatering. The system uses permanently mounted, reusable filter media to separate solids from liquids.

Applications include:

  • Biosolids
  • Grease trap waste
  • Septic tank sludge
  • Alum sludge
  • Industrial waste streams

Enhanced Filtration Performance – SludgeKing II™
For applications requiring greater filtration capacity, the SludgeKing II™ AquaCat™ roll-off container features two center filter walls that increase filtration area by 33% compared to single-center-wall designs. Its 90-degree filter corners help eliminate standing water in the sludge cake, while the increased filtration area promotes drier cakes in less time. Available in capacities from 15 to 40 cubic yards, SludgeKing II also features adjustable inlet flow distribution and floor cover plates that facilitate cake removal.

Challenging Sludges and Disposable Filtration – GeoCat™

GeoCat™ dewatering containers use disposable filter media to process challenging materials, including sticky, slimy, slightly oily, and nonuniform sludges. The disposable media simplifies cleanup by allowing the filter material to be discarded along with the dewatered sludge cake, eliminating the need to clean the filter for reuse.

Applications include:

  • Water treatment plant residuals
  • Gas scrubber ash
  • Arsenic sludge
  • Alum sludge

General Dewatering Applications – GritCat™

GritCat™ dewatering containers are designed for general dewatering applications, particularly waste streams containing gritty or sandy solids that typically do not require chemical conditioning. The system uses gravity and reusable filter media to separate solids from liquids. Once the dewatered material is removed, the filter media can be rinsed and reused.

Applications include:

  • Wastewater treatment plants
  • Vacuum truck waste
  • Industrial plant sump waste
  • Truck or heavy equipment wash basin waste

Other Considerations: Container Size and Handling

Beyond waste stream characteristics, container configuration is another important selection factor. NWPX Park offers dewatering systems in multiple configurations, including dump-hopper, front-loader, roll-off, trailer-mounted, and stand-mounted designs. Equipment selection should account for material volume, handling equipment, transportation needs, and site requirements.

Finding the Right Fit

The appropriate dewatering container depends on the material being processed, whether flocculation is needed, filter media preferences, and how dewatered solids will be handled. Understanding these requirements helps narrow the selection between AquaCat™, GeoCat™, and GritCat™, including specialized configurations such as SludgeKing II™.
